The Largest Rotary Wheel in the World It's 240 feet across and is the largest Rotary Wheel in the world, located in Greenfield Park, Wilmington, NC. It was started in 1924 when it was proposed to turn Greenfield Park, formerly Greenfield Lake, into a playground. Rotary joined the community for the continued beautification of Greenfield Park. On July 27, 1945, Houston Moore persuaded the club to adopt the improvement of Greenfield Park as a project for that year. In the fall of 1961, Dr. Heber Johnson proposed that Rotary build an amphitheater, and $6,000.00 was committed by Rotary. The Lost Colony Amphitheater was scrapping their seats and Dr. Johnson obtained them by hauling them off. Rotarians scraped, sanded, and painted the seats, and they were installed in the Wilmington amphitheater. In 1965, Rotary decided to create the largest Rotary emblem in the world. Later a Gazebo was erected as the hub of the wheel. Wilmington, North Carolina
